FAQ

Setup

1. What is a guitar/bass setup and why is it important to do a setup?

A guitar setup is not about lowering the action till you can shred with one hand. A good setup is one which a guitarist feels comfortable with, and allows him/her to play the style he/she wants to. In simple terms, a good setup is subjective, although there are certain guidelines to follow.

A guitar/bass setup is a physical adjustment of the instrument to achieve optimum action, sustain, intonation and balance.

Action - Distance between the strings and frets. Shredders prefer low action while some rhythm and jazz players prefer a slightly higher action to obtain some form of "resistance" on the strings when they press a chord.

Sustain - The ringing out of the note when played. This is usually related to buzzing.

Intonation - The accuracy of the pitch throughout the fingerboard.

Balance - The height of the strings with reference to the neck curvature and a straight neck, forming a natural and balanced feel when playing.

A setup will improve the playability of the instrument. A good setup allows a comfortable and natural feel when the instrument is being played.

2. What are the things you do in a guitar/bass setup?

Standard adjustment includes truss rod adjustment, neck tilt, saddle heights, floating bridge angle (if applicable). Sometimes when necessary, the nut may need filing or a replacement.

Instruments with uneven frets may sometimes need some hammering or filing work to level them.

3. Do I need to change my strings during a setup? Is the cost of string and re-stringing service included?

If you have old strings, it is recommended that the strings be changed during a setup. But it's the customer's choice whether to change or not.

The cost of the strings is not included in the setup service cost. The re-stringing service is included.

4. Can you guarantee that there will be no buzzing after a setup?

No, we can't. We believe nobody can makes this form of guarantee. The reason is simple, most guitars are not perfect and everybody has a different picking strength.

What we can assure you, is that the guitar/bass playability will be greatly improved and optimized for playing. If we are not able to improve the playability, the instrument will be returned to you without a fee.

5. Do I need to do a setup when I change my string gauge?

It depends, though most likely some form of adjustment may be required. When u changed from 009 to 0095 or 0010 gauge, you may not need a setup if the neck keeps the original straightness.

However, if it starts to bow, the action is affected and the guitar needs to be setup. Sometimes the nut needs to be re-filed, especially when a heavy bass gauge is used, in order for the bass strings to lie on the nut slot naturally.

6. My tremolo bridge or floyd rose has floated or dipped beyond the normal angle. Why is this so and what is to be done to restore it?

The floating bridge angle is set to be balanced by the string tension and the trem springs tension. When this balance is off, the angle will be incorrect.

This can be restored with a guitar setup done by us.
